Dublin singer Aoife Doyle is one of the new generation of jazz musicians that emerged from the BA in Jazz Performance programme at Newpark Music Centre, with all the technical and musical finesse that implies. But Doyle's singing is coming from a deeper, more natural place too, with a feeling for the blues learnt from Billie Holiday and the rare ability to improvise vocally. Her swinging quartet includes some of the best young players on the Dublin scene, including pianist Johnny Taylor, bassist Andrew Csibi and drummer Dominic Mullan, with veteran flautist Brian Dunning guesting on his own tune, Blue. The repertoire ranges from the Harold Arlen title track to tunes by Robbie Robertson and Bob Dylan, which provide a good sense of Doyle's range, without perhaps revealing all that much about what is going on behind that beautiful voice. aoifedoyle.com
