Anne Rynne album review: an open-hearted, open-armed debut

If ever there was a snapshot of musical expression in all its organic glory, Anne Rynne’s debut collection is it. Having been given a guitar by her younger brother, Luka Bloom, three years ago, she dived in deep, relishng the interplay between voice and music.

Her album is full of plain songs, unencumbered by unnecessary vocal flourishes or mixing desk embellishments. Her tastes run from Neil Young to Gillian Welch, Eddi Reader and, unsurprisingly, Luka himself.

There are local writers here too. On occasion, the ragged edged beauty of an original version (such as Tom Waits’s Georgia Lee) is diluted by Rynne’s crystalline delivery, but still, the unquestionable star of this collection is Rynne herself.

This is honest, open-hearted, open-armed singing in the vein of our timeless song tradition. Music by, of, and for, folks.
