Cloud Nothings Wichita * * * *
19-year-old Ohioan Dylan Baldi first grabbed attention with various self-recorded singles last year. In the run up to recording this full-length debut, he found some bandmates to fill the bass, drums and guitar roles. Baldi postponed college to delve into music full-time, and his gauche, fuzzy pop is worth the career change. The newly minted band effortlessly pull off garage-y four-piece (less Beatles, more Ramones) while sounding like they're having a ball. Recorded with Chester Gwazda (who worked with Future Islands and Dan Deacon), Cloud Nothingsis unfussy, hectic and hook-heavy. Part of the album's charm is the lack of gloss and unrestrained pace, as on the earworm choruses of Nothing's Wrongand the self-explanatory Rock. Baldi tells simple, enthusiastic stories of relationships and music, bowing out with You're Not That Good at Anything. We beg to differ. See wichita-recordings. com SINÉAD GLEESON
