What you've found . . .
John McCardle discovered the price difference between Mr Kipling cakes in Tesco in London and Galway stores. He bought six Mr Kipling Bakewell tarts at Tesco's branch in Richmond, London, for £1.07. That week his wife bought the same six-pack at Tesco's branch in Galway Shopping Centre for €2.38. Even assuming a high exchange rate, £1.07 shouldn't convert to more than about €1.60.
Tesco Ireland explained the difference by saying: "Price comparison across different countries is notoriously difficult due to different economies and markets.
"Raw material costs, production and processing costs, transport and distribution costs, wages, taxes, marketing and operating costs that apply to the producer, supplier and retailer are some of the factors that influence prices."
McCardle says: "I now buy my weekly cakes in Richmond and dutifully carry them back via Aer Lingus. Thankfully they have not yet incurred a handling charge for fragile goods (indeed fragile wallets)."
