1916 Diary - March 14th: Police report that "Dublin extremists" are on the move

March 14th, 1916

Police report: “Movements of Dublin extremists: I beg to report that on the 13th the under-mentioned extremists were observed moving about and associating with each other:

"Thomas Clarke has not yet returned to Dublin. Those observed to enter his shop, 75a, Parnell St, yesterday included C Colbert , John McDermott, E Daly and William 0'Leary Curtis.

“Bulmer Hobson, Thomas McDonagh, H Mellows, John McNeill, JJ O’Connell, M O’ Hanrahan, Joseph McGuinness, TJ McSweeney, Cork, and Pierce McCann, Cashel, in 2 Dawson St for an hour from 12 noon.

“About 50 Irish Volunteers were drilled for close on two hours, from 8pm, in the hall at rear of 41 Rutland Square .”

"After the last air raid over the province of Ferrara and Ravenna it was found, asserts the Milan correspondent of the Daily Mail, that the Austrians had dropped here and there a quantity of sweets, some wrapped in red and blue paper. The news was soon spread that they were poisoned, but such devilry was disbelieved. Now the military command of Bologna publishes the result of a chemical examination, from which it appears that the sweets were really a mixture of starch, sugar, and infectious germs. Fortunately none of them was eaten."

Convention – At a Sinn Féin convention for Co Tyrone, held in Dungannon, at which delegates from 13 branches were present, it was announced that over one thousand members had now been enrolled in Tyrone.

Police in Cork city entered the houses of three men who are connected with the Sinn Féin Volunteers. In one house they seized a revolver and ammunition and in another a number of documents. No arrests were made.

Target practice – At Dundrum (Co Tipperary) Petty Sessions yesterday Irish Volunteers Edward Dwyer, Ballagh, Cornelius Deere, Goold’s Cross, Michael Sheehan, Gorthrush, and Daniel McGrath, Loughfield, convicted and fined under the Defence of the Realm Act over target practice on property of the Great Southern and Western Railway .

Official opening of the 1916 Easter Rising in St Stephen's Green Exhibition by the OPW . Twenty illustrated information panels telling the story of the Rising in the green, which was taken over by Commandant Michael Mallin, Countess Markievicz and members of both the Irish Citizen Army and Cumann na mBan. Trenches were dug, barricades set up, a field hospital established in the bandstand, prisoners secured in the potting sheds – the green became a battlefield in the centre of Dublin .
