Following on from Tony Donoghue’s success in the short film section, Nick Ryan’s greatly admired The Summit – a documentary concerning a 2008 assault on K2 – took another prize for the Irish when the Sundance Film Festival handed out its gongs on Sunday night.

Having picked up the prize for editing: world cinema documentary, The Summit finds itself treading similar ground to Ken Wardrop’s His Hers, which grabbed a cinematography award at Sundance in 2010.

The winner of the jury prize for best US drama was Ryan Coogler’s Fruitvale. That film, following the last days in the life of an African-American controversially slain by traffic police, also won the all-important audience prize. Steve Hoover’s Blood Brother, study of a volunteer working with HIV/Aids patients, took the prize for best US documentary.
