ADiff review: Polish vampire mermaids cause chaos in The Lure

Two watery sirens, Silver and Golden, come onshore to work in a bizarre Warsaw strip bar. When one of the all-singing, all-splashing, blood-sucking – did we not mention they were vampire mermaids? – siblings falls for the club's resident bassist, she risks not only the family dream of relocating to the US but also the possibility that she will transform into sea foam should her love go unrequited. As much as we would love to say "If you see only one Polish disco-musical-mermaid-horror movie this year, make sure it's The Lure", Agnieszka Smoczynska's defiantly odd reworking of The Little Mermaid is often more discombobulating than entertaining. One scene sees the sisters get killed and dumped into a nearby river, only for them to turn up the next day, without remarking on the incident, save for biting off one of the culprit's fingers. Absurdly anarchic.
