In Lapse, Willie Doherty, an artist long renowned for his work addressing “the representation of landscape, territoriality, history and the rhetoric of identity” revisits an important phase of his development: the body of photo/text works that spelled out all his concerns, counterpointing black-and- white photographic images with terse, revealing phrases and words.

The way landscape is politically and ideologically inscribed and used was particularly evident in Northern Ireland at that historical moment. Lapse consists of black-and-white photographic images from this period (1985-1993). But these images have never been exhibited before, and they do not incorporate text in their presentation. We can, however, compare them directly to documentation of previous work, and perhaps to our own memories and knowledge of it.

The result is an interesting experiment in several kinds of time-lapse: then and now and what has changed, a way of working revisited and revised.
