The Dangers Beneath

A poem by Saoirse Lavery, age 13 ,Loreto Secondary School, Bray, Co Wicklow

A serene, calming surface,
Hiding terrors underneath,
A lion who’s grinning,
And baring its teeth.
An unsuspecting soul,
Just looking for some joy,
The lion just waiting ready to destroy.
A frightening trickle,
A deafening crash,
Huge rocks beneath sea-level,
On her head they all bash.
The ambulance shrieking,
Distress calls in the distance,
This poor little girl,
In dire need of assistance.
They come to her rescue,
But alas it’s too late,
Those blunt, invisible rocks,
Have decided her fate.
So to my dear reader,
For whom I hope to warn,
Please check the depths,
Before leaving the shore.
