A man (27) has died following an incident in a pub in Cork on Saturday evening.

Gardaí say they are investigating all the circumstances surrounding the death of the man, who became unresponsive while people were trying to restrain him.

The man, believed to be from Romania, was in a pub in Riverstick between Cork and Kinsale when he allegedly became unruly around 9pm and was ejected, but he attempted to return.

It’s understood a number of people tried to restrain him but the man collapsed and became unresponsive, and emergency services were called.

The incident happened in Allen’s Bar in Riverstick, some 17kms from Cork city and ten kilometres from Kinsale. There were between 20 and 30 customers in the bar at the time.

It’s understood the man only moved to the area four weeks ago from Limerick.

First responders, paramedics and gardaí worked on the man but he was pronounced dead at the scene by a local doctor. His body remained at the scene overnight as gardaí declared the bar a crime scene and cordoned off the area.

“Gardaí and emergency services responded to an incident at a licensed premises in Riverstick, Co. Cork on Saturday 4th July 2026 shortly after 9pm,” gardaí said in a statement.

“An adult male, (aged in his 20s) was pronounced deceased at the scene. His body has been removed to the mortuary at Cork University Hospital where a post-mortem examination will take place in due course. The Coroner has been notified.”

The man’s body remained at the scene overnight before his remains were removed shortly after 1pm on Sunday to the morgue at Cork University Hospital where State Pathologist, Dr SallyAnne Collis began a post-mortem shortly after 2pm.

Garda technical experts have also begun an examination of the scene, and it’s understood that gardaí are checking for CCTV footage to see whether the incident was captured on camera. It’s believed there were between 20 and 30 people in the bar at the time.

The Garda investigation will be determined by the pathologist’s examination into what caused the man’s death.

Gardaí have yet to release the man’s name but it’s understood that the man was single and gardaí say that they have already set in train procedures to contact the Romanian Embassy in Ireland so that his family back in Romania can before informed of the man’s death.

Gardaí have already spoken to a number of people who were in the bar at the time including bar staff and customers and taken some preliminary witness statements, but they are still appealing for witnesses to this incident to come forward.

Anyone with any information including road users who may have camera footage (including dash-cam) who were travelling in Riverstick, Co. Cork between 8pm and 9:30pm on Saturday July 4th 2026 are asked to make this footage available to investigating gardaí.
