The body of a young man found wrapped in carpet in Co Meath at the weekend has been identified as Mahamud Ilyas.
Mr Ilyas (22) died as a result of violent injuries before his body was dumped in an isolated wooded area on farmland near Kilbride. Gardaí believe the body had lain there for as little as a few hours before being located by a walker on Saturday afternoon. He was wrapped in a heavy carpet but there was no additional attempt to conceal the body which was found in a field beside Belgree Lane. Gardaí have launched an murder inquiry and are satisfied Mr Ilyas was killed elsewhere.
A postmortem has been carried out but the exact results are not being released “for operational reasons”.
Mr Ilyas lived in Blanchardstown, west Dublin and is believed to originally have come to Ireland from Somalia. A large-scale search involving the Garda dog unit and water unit was carried out on Sunday.
The investigation is being led by gardaí from Ashbourne who are appealing for information. In particular they wish to speak to anyone who saw or spoke to Mr Ilyas between 10am on Friday, December 9th and Saturday afternoon on December 10th. They are also appealing to anyone who travelled along Belgree Lane, Kilbride on Friday, December 9th or Saturday, December 10th to come forward.
“Motorists with dashcam footage from this location are asked to make it available to gardaí. Anyone with information is asked to contact the incident room at Ashbourne Garda station on 01 8010600, the Garda confidential Line 1800 666 111 or any Garda station.”
