Shannon Airport to complete €5.3m airfield upgrade this week

Shannon Airport is due to finish more than €5 million worth of work on its airfield this week.

Local firm Clare Civil Engineering has been working on improvements to aircraft parking and other areas since last October.

State company Shannon Group, which owns the airport, says the improvements cost €5.3 million and will be completed this week.

The work involved extending part of the apron, where aircraft embark and disembark passengers, load cargo and refuel, as well as resurfacing the long-term aircraft and executive jet parking areas.

Niall Maloney, Shannon Airport's director of operations, confirmed that the Department of Transport had footed half the €5.3 million bill.

He noted that the airport was recovering following almost two years of severe Government Covid curbs.

“This time has allowed us to focus on key elements and provide longevity to the airport infrastructure, developed for our aircraft and associated operators,” he said.

Shannon has spent €20 million on upgrades over the past five years.
