Weblog: Descartes brought to surf generation via Kickstarter

Philosophy Bro translates 17th-century philosopher’s work into bro-talk

Could I convince you to read Meditations on First Philosophy, a work by René Descartes considered to be the founding text of modern philosophy? What if I told you it had lots of swearwords and sounds like Bill and Ted had a hand in writing it?

Philosophy Bro, the online persona of American philosophy graduate Tommy Maranges, who is one part surfer dude and one part Plato, has created a Kickstarter project in the form of Descartes' Meditations, Bro.

This book takes Descartes, page by page, and translates it into hilarious bro-talk, for example, on the nature of reality versus illusion, PhilosophyBro says: “Sometimes I really do dream crazy s*** like my face is not a face, it is instead a paper cup filled with Jell-O and booze.”

He’s like an American frat-boy incarnation of Ross O’Carroll-Kelly, except a fair bit more intelligent.
