Web Log: The purrfect listening experience for your cat

Try these comforting rhythms out on your feline friend (but not if they’re already asleep)

Someone has composed music just for cats. No, really. And it's not that bad. US composer David Teie has spent the last six years developing his scientific theory on "the fundamental nature of music appreciation by mammals" while carrying out a study in conjunction with the University of Wisconsin. The result is a series of compositions designed to appeal to the particular musical preferences of cats.

There’s a sample on the website and I played it for my furry friend. She looked at the laptop, looked at me and then went back to sleep. Thoroughly unimpressed.

If a Facebook video I watched is anything to go by, she appears to be the exception. The deep thrum of purrs accompanied by soaring strings that sound a little like mewing seem to excite and entrance other felines.
