The Sims 4 game and its parent company EA are already known for their inclusivity: the Sims franchise has long had the option of characters entering same-sex relationships and marriage. EA has previously had gay characters in Dragon Age 2 and Star Wars: The Old Republic. Now The Sims 4 is beginning to dismantle the dated notion of the gender binary by giving players new gender neutral customisation options. Aside from all clothing, accessories, hair styles, makeup, etc now being unlocked for your Sim to wear, they can also have any body type, walking style, and tone of voice regardless of their gender. What is interesting though is that you still do have to choose between either male or female at the outset. For now, gender in The Sims 4 is still a binary construct rather than a spectrum but fair play to EA for working towards more inclusive gaming.
