Web Log: Peeple app faces backlash

Cofounder tweaks original concept of Peeple to ‘positivity-only app’ after criticism

Yelp for people. This is how chief executive and cofounder of Peeple app, Julia Cordray described it in her own words.

Except a Yelp for people essentially serves as a platform for telling others how much they suck, especially when the functionality was described as one where no one had to opt in; anyone could write anything about you and give you a one-star rating.

Isn’t that the internet , though? Well, no. Peeple could serve as an abuse aggregator and that’s the feedback Cordray got after floating the idea ahead of launch.

So Cordray has decided to tweak the app, making it opt-in and describing it as a “positivity-only app” where the subject has to approve of their rating – a place where others visit to ply you with spontaneous approval. Sounds like the Endorsements feature on LinkedIn that is used by zero people.
