Cayan, the US payments company, plans to establish a new support centre in Belfast which will create 170 jobs.

The Boston-headquartered technology company, which provides payment processing services to businesses, first set up a technology development division in the North four years ago.

The company has offices across the US but, speaking in Belfast on Wednesday Paul Vienneau, Cayan's chief technology officer, said its Northern Ireland team had been "incredibly significant" to its business and praised the "positive work ethic" that the company had experienced in the North.

Mr Vienneau added: “ We are delighted with the growth of our Belfast operation to date and locating our customer service team alongside our product development/engineering operations in Belfast will offer increased operating efficiencies.”

Invest NI

The company's investment programme is being supported by Invest NI, which has offered Cayan a £680,000 (€773, 647) employment grant to establish the new customer services function.

Jeremy Fitch, an executive director with Invest NI, said Cayan's decision to base its primary customer services function in Belfast represented its confidence in the North as an investment location.

“The 170 jobs being created through this investment will generate over £3.6 million in annual salaries for the local economy and offer valuable employment opportunities for a range of job seekers including school leavers and graduates,” he added.
