Twitter on growth, advertising and pesky bots

I love the smell of quarterly reports in the morning! Twitter’s latest filing to the United States Securities and Exchange Commission has some meaty statistics on usage and growth for the mighty microblogging service.

The average number of MAUs (monthly average users) for this period has grown by 24 per cent since last year to 271 million users. Eight and a half percent, however, aren’t real people according to Twitter’s own report; they’re bots or automated accounts. Despite these zombie accounts advertising seems to be going well; the average revenue per timeline view was US$1.60 for this quarter, 100 per cent up on last year so those promoted tweets are working out.
