It seems appropriate that a new streaming horror-movie service surfaces just as the master of the genre, Wes Craven, passes away. Although they spawned their own subgenres, there is a vast world of terror beyond the Nightmare on Elm Street and Scream franchises and this is what Shudder sets out to demonstrate.
Whether you are a vampire veteran or a nightmare newbie, Shudder aims to please with a streaming service that is hand-curated by Colin Geddes, the guy behind the Midnight Madness programme at the Toronto Film Festival.
Rather than searching for a particular film on Shudder, you browse by genre, monster or collection. This guarantees plenty of suggestions from the relatively straightforward genres of psychological thrillers or zombie-themed features to “romantic bloodsuckers” and “Eurohorror cult masters”.
Happy viewing and, whatever you do, don’t fall asleep.
