Sony has urged customers to stop using a model of its Vaio computers launched earlier this year, saying there was a risk that the battery would overheat and catch fire.
Customers are advised to stop using the PC and disconnect it from the power adapter.
In a statement, the company said it had shipped 25,905 of the Vaio Fit 11A in 52 countries since its launch in February, including more than 7,000 in Europe. The touch screen device is currently available in Ireland, but Sony Ireland said only a small number of the devices had been shipped here.
Customers can check if their machine is affected by going to http://www.sony.ie/support/en/vaio-fit-battery.
The company issued the warning after three PCs caught on fire around the battery pack.
The potential recall comes as Sony chief executive Kazuo Hirai attempts to revive the consumer electronics business through restructuring and job cuts. The Tokyo-based company may sell its Vaio computer business to Japan Industrial Partners and Mr Hirai has said he will split Sony’s TV manufacturing unit into a separate operating entity by July.
