Communications regulator ComReg has published its draft strategy for the period 2012-2014 and is seeking submissions on the document from interested parties.
One of the major issues for the regulator will be the release of radio spectrum currently used for the transmission of analogue television signals. ComReg expects to auction off spectrum in the 800MHz band for next-generation telecoms services. The 900MHz GSM and 1800 MHz GSM bands will also be fully liberalised.
ComReg has also identified the roll-out of “competitive access networks” as a major priority. This would enable other operators to provide high-speed next-generation networks over Eircom’s network, once it is upgraded to fibre.
