One More Thing: A tough call to make for judge in Digicel case

Companies owned by Denis O’Brien have been involved in some pretty bitter court battles in recent years, but this has got to be a first.

Digicel was this week due to defend an action taken against it in the Jamaican Supreme Court by a man who alleges the telco exposed his extramarital affair. The company, which has previously denied the claim, declined to comment to local media because the case is now sub judice.

Then again, what could you possibly say about a lawsuit such as that?

Junior Gooden, a Jamaican businessman, claims that one of Digicel’s customer care agents told his wife he had a VIP pay plan with another woman.

Gooden claims his angry spouse then threw several missiles at him when she heard about his multi-tasking, before hitting him over the head with a bottle.

His wife then allegedly damaged his car and disrupted his business, forcing him to close it.

Digicel operates in more than 30 markets and has over 13 million customers. It has fought countless court cases across the Caribbean against incumbents, regulators, rivals, the lot. But I’d bet my wedding ring it has never faced a case like this one.

Gooden has accused the company of a breach of confidentiality. The case was listed for hearing all week in the Jamaican supreme court. Talk about wigs on the green . . .
