European Technology Summit returns to Cork

A European Technology Summit taking place in Cork tomorrow aims to highlight some of the best businesses in the Irish and European tech sectors.

The conference, organised by it@Cork, will examine a number of topics including cloud and web security, social media and future trends for technology.

The future of technology will be the topic of discussion with Don O'Leary from Twitter and Serena Lawless from Google. They will be joined by Dr Nicola Millard who is a customer experience futurologist with BT. UPC chief executive Magnus Ternsjo, HubSpot managing director Jeetu Mahtani and John Scanlan, VP of operations at Flextronics will discuss the big trends that are coming in technology.

The area of cyber security has moved from the technology news to the mainstream news in recent months and companies have really begun to sit up and pay attention to the complexities of this issue. IBM vice president of technology and security Denis Kennelly will examine the subject in a panel discussion with Trend Micro enterprise security director Simon Walsh and Eircom director of strategy and market development Enda Doyle. "The technology sector has been a shining star in the Irish economy for over a decade, with increasing employment levels and increasing exports, all helping to benefit the wider Irish economy," said Dervla Mannion, VP European operations centre at Trend Micro in Cork.

The inaugural European Sport Tourism Summit is also taking place this week, at Thomond Park in Limerick. The event will focus on the potential of sport and tourism, addressing all aspects of the sector from global sports events, professional sports teams’ impact on host cities to attracting and hosting mass participation events. According to the UN World Tourism Organisation, Sport Tourism is worth $600 billion (€452 billion) per annum.
