Imagine being able to access cameras inside your fridge while in a supermarket to check if you need more milk. Well that technology is on its way according to Karsten Ottenberg, chief executive of BSH (Bosch) Home Appliances.

Speaking at Mobile World Congress, he said next year will see the majority of new kitchen devices embedded for connection.

“We have been surprised by the strong interest of consumers in the connected fridge. We’re launching such a device this year and that will have two cameras fitted so owners can remotely observe what consumables it contains.”

However, he cautioned that any connected appliances must be made secure, with consumers aware what data from these devices is collected and how it will be used.

“Basic security must be embedded by the white goods manufacturer. Users will want to personalise their devices, but they must be made secure”.

He said BSH didn’t want a washing machine or any other device to become infected with a virus such as the Struxnet virus.

“Last year a connected fridge in the US did start operating as a botnet sending out spam,” he said.
