Targets set for growth in trade

GROWTH in exports of indigenous goods and services, other than food, amounting £4

GROWTH in exports of indigenous goods and services, other than food, amounting £4.5 billion a year, is one of the targets set by the Department of Tourism and Trade in a policy statement issued yesterday.

The Department's "Strategic Management Statement" sets out three major objectives for 1994 to 1999.

Growth of 65 per cent in foreign earnings from tourism, on the basis of a sustainable tourism industry, is expected. Earnings are expected to rise to £2.25 billion a year "creating the equivalent of 35,000 new full time jobs by 1999.

The third objective outlined is to "ensure that the Department meets to the highest standards possible the requirements of the Oireachtas, the Government, the Minister, the minister of state, and the public".
