Superquinn is planning a €1 million revamp of its SuperClub loyalty scheme, which was the first of its kind in Ireland when launched in 1993 by former owner Feargal Quinn.

About 250,000 "active" cardholders will receive notice next week of the grocer's plans to issue them with a "Superquinn Reward Card".

Superquinn, which is owned by Select Retail Holdings, has signed a deal with the Gift Voucher Company to join its "One4All" scheme.

This will allow Superquinn shoppers to turn their loyalty points into vouchers that are accepted by 600 retailers, hotels, spas, restaurants and travel providers throughout Ireland. These include Brown Thomas, Debenhams, Woodies DIY, Boots, Smyth's Toys and Argos.

Shoppers will also receive money-off coupons by post on a quarterly basis that they can spend in Superquinn shops.

To promote the changes, Superquinn will run a competition offering the winner one million free reward points, which carry a value of €10,000. About 200 products will also carry triple or quadruple bonus points.

Each point will be worth one cent. At present, shoppers can either offset the points they earn against their bills at the till or request vouchers to buy products from Argos.

Superquinn chief executive Simon Burke said the scheme had been "moribund" in recent years.

"Usage has been slipping for the past two or three years," he said. "We want to let people know that it's back and that it's worth paying attention to."
