Tipperary whiskey company secures €5m in funding

A Tipperary-based whiskey company has secured €5 million in funding which it plans to use to develop its own distillery.

Tipperary Boutique Distillery currently buys mature whiskey from other distillers but soon plans to distil its own whiskey using its own barley.

The funding, from Steelworks Investments, will make the distiller a “field-to-bottle operation”, the first of its kind in Tipperary in roughly 200 years.

"We are naturally delighted with this investment which will realise our plan to distil our own whiskey," said Jennifer Nickerson, the managing director of the distillery.

“The provenance of both the barley used to make our whiskey coming from our own farm at Ballindoney and now being distilled in the locality allows us to claim true terroir,” she said.

In addition to developing the distillery, the company plans to provide a tourist offering whereby people staying in the Dundrum House Hotel – which owns the grounds on which the distillery will be built – will be able to visit the development.

The company projects 15,000 visitors to come in 2020 and 40,000 by 2025.

The activity will create a total of 15 jobs in the areas of production, bottling, sales and administration.
