Supervalu stays ahead of rivals in share of Irish grocery spend

All major retailers except Tesco increased sales in past 12 weeks, with Dunnes strongest

There was no change in the supermarket share figures released by Kantar Worldpanel yesterday, covering the 12 weeks to June 19th with Supervalu, retaining the top spot.

The figures show continued growth for the grocery market with sales rising by 2.5 per cent compared with last year. However the retail analysts warned that fears over Brexit could affect a sustained recovery in the sector.

Georgieann Harrington, insight director at Kantar Worldpanel, said the average spend per household had increased by €27 this year. She said growth was primarily the result of households making more shopping trips rather than rising prices.

All of the major retailers except Tesco increased sales in the past 12 weeks, with Dunnes strongest, growing sales by 5.9 per cent. Lidl posted the second-highest sales growth at 5.8 per cent, while Aldi sales grew by 3.6 per cent in the latest quarter.
