Bill O’Herlihy: we’ll leave it there, so

Bill O’Herlihy, the gentleman of the Irish public relations scene, appears to be tying up a few more loose ends.

Billo hung up his microphone as RTÉ's main sports presenter in the summer, after almost half a century, 10 soccer World Cups and a billion rows between Eamon Dunphy, John Giles and Liam Brady.

The 76-year-old has kept busy with his PR outfit, O’Herlihy Communications, which has a staff of seven.

O’Herlihy co-owns its Ballsbridge base with a partner and the building has gone sale agreed. It should make him a nice few bob.

The rumour in PR circles is that O’Herlihy wouldn’t run anybody from the gate if they were to make an offer to buy the PR business, which is well-known for its work on behalf of Big Tobacco.

There is no formal process, but it would make sense to exit at a time when it could easily merge with another firm, rather than striking a new lease when the sale of its building closes.

Played a bit of golf

I used to play a bit of golf with O’Herlihy, through the

Dublin Journalists Golf Association

. He beat me off the course on several occasions.
