One more thing: O’Brien companies in Caribbean cahoots

News reaches us that that Denis O'Brien's Digicel Jamaica has teamed up with the UK-based services support and maintenance outfit Sierra, which is also owned by the Irish tycoon.

Sierra (which is owned by SiteServ, which in turn is owned by O’Brien) will provide installation and back office services to the group.

The overlapping ownership of the two companies might cause some competitors to claim it’s just not cricket, but Peter McCarthy, Sierra’s chief operating officer, would not be among their number.

“We believe that our expertise, coupled with a consistent pursuit towards offering innovative solutions will ensure an efficient contract delivery and successful partnership,” he explains. Howzat!

Sticking with the Caribbean’s game of choice, the ever-busy Digicel has also announced an extension of its sponsorship deal with the West Indies team.

This comes hot on the heels of its commercial backing of this summer's inaugural Caribbean Premier League, featuring the Twenty20 incarnation of the sport.

Digicel has confirmed a renewed endorsement deal with the West Indies cricketers, initially snatched from a competitor in 2004.

The last five-year deal was worth a minimum of €20 million.

The company was not so sporting in releasing details but it’s probably safe to assume the value has declined this time around.

Earlier speculation surrounding the sponsorship put it that while Digicel was ready for another innings, it was less inclined to renew every aspect of the relationship.
