Mobile phone users will soon be able to purchase goods and services from retailers using their mobile handsets as a type of "electronic wallet".

The mobile e-commerce solution, which has been a feature of the successful I-mode service in Japan, is being pioneered by Eircell and will begin trials this week. It will allow customers to bill small purchases to their mobile phone accounts instead of using credit cards or cash payments.
