German shares were down after a day of low volumes and general volatility. Traders say the market remains nervous and is worried about international developments.

Lufthansa led the declining stocks, falling by nearly four per cent.

Paris stocks trimmed their early gains to close slightly up after a day of mixed trade was exaggerated by thin volumes during the summer lull.

The index opened jumpy following Wall Street's slide on Tuesday night and remained volatile despite soothing comments from brokers who said French stocks were less vulnerable than their US counterparts because of healthy company results and a sound economy.

Italian shares ended just off session lows in thin trading with a weak market entirely at the mercy of the whims of a nervous Wall Street, dealers said.

"It is a lifeless market," one trader said.
