TG4 to invest €350,000 given ‘dramatic increase’ in online viewing

Irish language television channel TG4 is planning to invest roughly €350,000 in a system to increase storage capacity "given the dramatic increase in online viewing and the associated production overhead".

The channel, which has an audience share of roughly 2 per cent in Ireland, is inviting bids for a new "central storage system" to replace the existing system.

The new system is required by the channel for three core uses, including the live playout of the company’s daily broadcast schedule; the temporary repository in the creation of all online material; and a hub for a fast and accessible file sharing system.

A spokeswoman for the Baile na hAbhann-based channel told The Irish Times that TG4 was one of the first TV broadcasters in Europe to implement a fully file-based, end-to-end system – a system that is now becoming the norm.

In order to bid, applicants have to fulfil a number of criterion including an annual turnover of at least €1 million per year for providing a similar service elsewhere; evidence of tax payments and; knowledge and experience in providing similar projects to the broadcasting industry.

Bids to provide the new system must be sent in by July 17th.
