Taoiseach pays tribute to TG4 on 25th anniversary

Taoiseach Micheál Martin has paid tribute to TG4 as the Irish language station celebrates its 25th anniversary this evening.

Halloween night 1996 marked the launch of Telifís na Gaeilge (TnaG) in Baile na hAbhann, Connemara. A message from then president Mary Robinson was followed by fireworks music and dance. The station changed its name to TG4 three years later.

The Taoiseach extended his “warmest congratulations” to the station as it celebrates this “very significant milestone” this evening.

“For the last quarter of a century, TG4 has performed a vital role in Irish society, and has established itself as a distinctive and unique voice on Ireland’s media landscape. Its success over the past 25 years is a tribute to the commitment and dedication of its staff, management and board.”

Mr Martin said TG4’s “vibrant mix” of local, national and international news and current affairs, entertainment, sport and culture has served its core audiences well.

“It has also resonated with the broader public . . . much look forward to seeing TG4 go from strength to strength in the years ahead.”
