On-set carbon calculators part of Screen Ireland’s sustainability plan

The use of a carbon calculator will become a mandatory minimum requirement for all film, television and animation productions backed by Screen Ireland under a new sustainability plan.

The plan, which outlines how the State agency will help the Irish industry lower its carbon footprint and be more inclusive, includes funding for an in-depth assessment of the environmental impact of the screen industry, while Screen Ireland said it intended to make its own operations net-zero carbon by 2025.

On-site “sustainability advocates” will be provided by the agency to the productions it funds, while it will also develop a pilot programme to review the energy consumption and carbon footprints of screen projects and provide a financial incentive pilot, valued at up to €25,000 per production, that will encourage emission reductions.

Accelerated funding

The organisation also said it would accelerate funding to schemes that have a strong diversity, equality and inclusion objective as part of their allocation process in order to increase opportunities in the industry and make it more representative of the population.
