Noel Furlong, the Kildare-based businessman and well-known poker player and horse trainer, died on Sunday aged 83.

Mr Furlong was the founder of multimillion-euro business Furlong Flooring, which was founded in 1980 and is headquartered in west Dublin. It employs hundreds of staff across Ireland, England and Wales.

Mr Furlong was prominent in the horse racing industry. He was also famous for picking up $1 million in 1999, when he won a World Series of Poker event.

Furlong Flooring is a leading manufacturer and distributor of carpets and other floor-covering products. Operating from a 150,000sq ft purpose-built warehouse in Ballymount industrial estate in Dublin, the group also owns distribution companies in London, Preston and Wales.

Mr Furlong's family said he died "peacefully at home". A private funeral is to take place in Monkstown, Dublin, on Thursday, which can be viewed online.
