A HIGH Court judge has been elected president of the Association of European Competition Law Judges.
Mr Justice Liam McKechnie will lead the body, which represents judges from each of the 27 EU member states.
The association promotes consistency in the application of EU competition law by facilitating the exchange of knowledge and experience among the judiciary.
The role of national judges in enforcing EU competition law has increased significantly since 2004.
Mr Justice McKechnie presides over competition matters in the High Court. Cartel cases on which he has made determinations include those in the beef, sugar and car sectors.
A former chairman of the Bar Council, he was appointed to the High Court in 2000 and has a master’s in European law.
