Ireland Power Energy Limited has selected General Electric and an Austrian engineering company to build its 400 megawatt power station in Mulhuddart, west Dublin.

EPower said construction would begin in about eight months and the €200 million plant would be operational by December 2002.

Ireland Power Energy is a consortium consisting of ePower, BP Amoco and Ireland Power. EPower is a joint venture established by a consortium led by the founder and former chairman of Esat Telecom, Mr Denis O'Brien, and US power company GPU International. In June it took a 40 per cent stake in the station being developed by BP Amoco and Ireland Power, a group controlled by US businessman Mr Larry Thomas.

EPower and BP Amoco will each own 40 per cent of the station, with Ireland Power owning the remainder.

The Austrian firm, VA Tech, an international power engineering company, will concentrate on the construction of the plant, while GE will supply the turbine.
