Yesterday's business website poll asked: Are the job cuts proposed by Bank of Ireland justified in light of Thursday's results?

Your verdict: Yes - 37%, No - 63%

Your reaction...

Last year's results are irrelevant - it is a journalistic myth that they are relevant. Businesses do not exist to pay as many staff as possible, but to make a profit. The real question is what staff the bank will need to continue to make a profit.

The bank market is about to become very competitive, and AIB and Bank of Ireland are certain to lose share. And that means they will need fewer staff.

Bank of Ireland is a business and the people who run it have an obligation to make it as efficient (and as profitable) as possible. Employees can walk in and out of jobs without having to justify their actions to employers, so why should this business have to justify these job cuts?

What do the results have to do with the job cuts? If the bank needs the staff for its business, it is not going to let them go. If it does not need them, it should not retain them at the expense of its shareholders.

As far as I know, banks are in the business of making money and if they are top heavy with employees, then to continue making profits, cuts have to be made. Otherwise what's the point?
