The deadlines for submissions for the public consultation on ways to improve the means by which the State can fund itself into the future has been extended by a further 10 days.

The Commission on Taxation and Welfare, which is chaired by Prof Niamh Moloney, was established in October. It intends to consider how both the taxation and welfare systems can support economic activity and promote increased employment and prosperity, while ensuring that there are sufficient resources available to meet the costs of the public services .

Among the measures the commission is expected to consider are a wealth tax and replacement of the local property tax (LPT) with a broader site value tax.

Prof Moloney said the deadline for submissions to the public consultations has been extended to mid-January to allow as many interested parties to make their views known.

“Notwithstanding our tight timeframes, I believe it is essential that we hear from as many people and organisations as we possibly can,” she said.

“In response to the high levels of engagement to date, we have taken the decision to extend the deadline for our public consultation to January 17th, allowing individuals and organisations additional time to submit a response and make their voices heard,” Prof Moloney added.
