Shares in Germany ended shy of a record high, but further significant gains were undermined by early weakness on Wall Street Earlier, the DAX index hit a net bourse record of 2860.24 points The DAX has rallied strongly in the last week, gaining 3 per cent on the back of the strength of the dollar.

Paris CAC 40: 2315.66 (+ 2.97)

The Paris Bourse overcame profit taking to post a small gain, bringing the index to its highest level in more than two years. Trading was relatively active with volume of 4.7 billion francs. The market was helped by the franc's greater firmness against the deutschmark, traders said.

Milan MIBTEL: 10,448 (+3)

Italian shares slipped lower in subdued trading yesterday, ignoring the turnaround in domestic bonds and the firmer lira, and watching the early dip on Wall Street and the softer trend to other European bourses. Dealers said there was little buying interest in early trading.
