British Aerospace announced yesterday that it was to take over GEC's defence division Marconi Electronic systems in a deal which will create the world's third largest defence company.
The deal, which values the Marconi business at £7.7 billion sterling (#11 billion), will create a merged company worth £17 billion sterling.
