The chairman of American Express yesterday backtracked on testimony he gave to the US Senate in May, when he failed to confirm in two instances that evidence he had given to sway politicians against Visa and MasterCard was accurate.

Mr Harvey Golub was appearing as a government witness at the Visa and MasterCard antitrust trial in New York.
