Pizza delivery firm posts 46 per cent decline in pre-tax profit for first six months of 2013

The pizza chain’s sales for the UK, Ireland, Germany and Switzerland grew by 13.8 per cent during the period, according to the company’s interim results for the 26 weeks leading up to June 2013. However, profit before tax (after exceptional items) fell from £21.5 million to £11.6 million.

Sales for all Domino’s stores which were opened in the Republic of Ireland prior to December 25th 2011 were up 6.5 per cent when compared to the same period last year.

The company also recorded sales growth in the UK (6.4 per cent), Germany (23.8 per cent) and Switzerland (7.8 per cent).

Domino’s chief executive officer, Lance Batchelor, said he was particularly pleased with the company’s results in the UK and Ireland which have “shown strong like-for-like sales growth against challenging comparatives”.

“Our franchise system leads the leisure sector and, with the majority of our business coming via a web and mobile platform, we are now truly an online retailer,” he said.

The group’s interim dividend increased by 4.6 per cent to 7.10 p per share and basic earnings per share increased by 5 per cent to 10.8p.

During the period a total of 21 stores and one mobile were opened with just two closures. Nearly 600 jobs were created and this the company expects this to increase to 1,500 by the end of the year.
