RWE has switched on a €25 million electric battery storage plant that the German energy giant says is its biggest to date.
The company has built a battery storage unit at Lisdrumdoagh, Co Monaghan, that can store up to 60 megawatts of electricity.
Battery storage is used to balance highs in renewable electricity generation with actual demand by holding unneeded power for a period until the national grid seeks it.
Lisdrumdoagh is RWE’s second such plant and is the biggest that the German multinational has built here to date.
The company built its first battery storage plant, capable of holding 8.5 megawatts of electricity, near Balbriggan, Co Dublin. RWE switched this on in April 2021.
A turbulent recovery for tourism and air travel
Cathal Hennessy, managing director, RWE Renewables Ireland, confirmed that the company had spent €25 million on Lisdrumdoagh.
He noted that Ireland was an “excellent starting point for RWE Renewables” as it sought to grow its battery business.
RWE also built and runs a wind farm in Co Kerry that can generate up to 10 megawatts of electricity. The company is weighing further opportunities here.
