Are you living with chronic knee pain that limits your ability to enjoy life? Do you find yourself avoiding activities you once loved, struggling with mobility and relying on medication for relief? If so: you’re not alone. Knee pain is a widespread issue affecting people of all ages, and for many, knee replacement surgery offers a path to lasting pain relief and renewed mobility.

However, misconceptions surround knee replacement surgery remain, leading people to delay or avoid a procedure that could significantly improve their quality of life. Blackrock Health has launched a new campaign, What You Knee-d to Know, to address these myths and empower individuals to make informed decisions about their knee health.

“One of the challenges we face is dispelling common myths about knee replacement surgery,” says Philip Brady, consultant orthopaedic surgeon at Blackrock Health. “Many people believe that knee replacement is only for the very old, that recovery is long and arduous or that the implants don’t last very long. This is simply not true. Delaying surgery can result in restriction on movement, resulting in psychological and emotional impact, so it’s important to seek help if you are experiencing pain.”

Myth one: Knee replacement is only for the very old

While age can be a factor in developing knee problems, Mr Brady emphasises that knee replacement is not just for older people. “It is a common misconception that joint replacement surgery is only for older people. While age is a factor in the development of knee osteoarthritis, we are seeing an increasing number of patients in the 50-65 age range – representing over one quarter of knee replacement recipients worldwide – who are excellent candidates for knee replacement surgery.”

“If non-surgical interventions, such as physical therapy and intra-articular injections, have been exhausted and the patient’s quality of life remains significantly compromised, knee replacement surgery represents a definitive treatment option.”

Myth two: Recovery is long and arduous

Recovery times have improved dramatically in recent years. Research from Blackrock Health reveals that 35 per cent of people are back to day-to-day activities less than a month after surgery. “At Blackrock Health, we utilise advanced surgical techniques and rehabilitation protocols to minimise recovery time,” Brady explains. “Our dedicated teams work with each patient to create a personalised recovery plan to get them back on their feet as quickly and safely as possible.”

Myth three: Knee replacements don’t last very long

According to Brady, contemporary knee implants are designed for longevity. “Current data indicates that 82 per cent of knee replacements remain functional for over 25 years. Advancements in materials and surgical techniques are constantly improving the longevity of these implants.”

Addressing fears and concerns

Brady understands that many patients have fears and concerns before undergoing knee replacement surgery. Research shows that the surgery itself is often the biggest fear, followed by the wait before returning to normal.

“We address these concerns by providing comprehensive preoperative education, explaining the procedure in detail, and setting realistic expectations for recovery,” says Brady.

“We encourage patients to reach out to establish a support network before their surgery to assist with the recovery process. We provide ongoing support and guidance throughout the recovery process, but having the support of loved ones can make a significant difference.”
