Heat pumps driving efficient and sustainable home heating solutions

Air to water heat pumps are being used as the main heat source in many new build homes and are also being considered for older homes undergoing a deep retrofit. Despite retrofitting numbers having dropped drastically in Ireland in recent years, the Government’s Climate Action Plan has a target to reduce emissions from the residential sector by retrofitting the equivalent of 500,000 homes and installing 400,000 heat pumps in existing homes to replace older, less efficient heating systems by the end of 2030*.

Air to water heat pumps

The A+++ Grant Aerona³ R32 air to water air source heat pump is a firm favourite as the main heat source in self-build projects and new build developments. The Aerona³ heat pump is also being installed as part of deep retrofit projects in older homes, where homeowners can avail of several heat pump grants from the SEAI to help on their journey to zero carbon.

Available in four outputs of 6kW, 10kW, 13kW and 17kW, Grant’s Aerona³ R32 air to water air source heat pump offers a sustainable form of heating that lowers a home’s overall carbon footprint. Units within the range have achieved an A+++ energy rating due to their ability to run at low temperatures. In addition, the 13kW and 17kW models within the range have also been recognised by international award programme Quiet Mark for their low noise qualities.

The Aerona³ R32 heat pump’s ability to work in tandem with other Grant heating technologies adds to its popularity. In particular, the Aerona³ works well when combined with Grant’s Uflex underfloor heating system as both technologies work at low temperatures to use less energy, thereby providing significant carbon and financial savings for the homeowner.

Underfloor heating

Ideal for emitting heating throughout a new build, the Grant Uflex underfloor heating system offers convenient and highly efficient heating. This unobtrusive heat source is embedded within the floor construction and is fitted as part as the floor’s assembly process, therefore causing no delays in construction. The installation of underfloor heating consists of a series of flexible pipes being laid within the floor through where hot water flows, hence transferring heat upwards and radiating heat evenly into a room.

In addition to providing a balance of warmth throughout a room, underfloor heating offers increased hygiene due to reduced air circulation and ensures more space to design and decorate a room without blocking radiators with furniture.

When installing a heat pump as part of a retrofit, Grant Afinia aluminium radiators would be the most common choice of heat emitter for individual rooms. The Afinia range is also designed to work effectively with low temperature heating systems and so pairs easily with Grant Aerona heat pumps.

Fully integrated heating system

To avail of a fully integrated heating system, the main heat source and heat emitters must then be complemented with hot water storage, such as the Grant Integrated Unit. The popular space-saving Integrated Unit has been developed to work together with the Grant Aerona³ R32 air to water air source heat pump range, Afinia radiators and Uflex underfloor heating system. The aesthetically pleasing unit can be installed neatly within domestic spaces of a property to ensure an optimum efficiency, complete heating solution.
