Applications are invited for the role of Sports Editor in The Irish Times.
The Sports Editor leads and directs our top class, comprehensive sports coverage on digital and print platforms. This is a key role for The Irish Times and satisfying our audience’s interests, while cultivating new readers and subscribers, is a major priority in the area.
Key aspects of the role include prioritising and shaping our sports coverage throughout the week with particular emphasis on growing digital engagement. The person appointed will lead the department in planning and coordinating content and directing and supporting the work of correspondents and reporters to ensure the highest standards are maintained.
The role demands an indepth knowledge of Irish and international sport and an astute understanding of the potential of digital and social media sports coverage to attract and retain readers and subscribers. The person appointed to this role needs to have a real nose for original, creative journalism.
The successful candidate will be an experienced journalist with incisive editorial judgment. Candidates will have a proven ability in building, managing and developing a dynamic and efficient team of reporters, columnists and production journalists. They will have excellent presentation, writing and interpersonal skills with an aptitude for budget management. The post calls for high levels of commitment and flexibility.
The salary and other terms and conditions of this appointment will be based on the agreement between The Irish Times and the National Union of Journalists.
