The Deputy Foreign Editor plays a key role in commissioning and organising Irish Times coverage from around the world on our digital and print platforms.
Working closely with the Foreign Editor, the Deputy Foreign Editor is responsible for assisting with the editing, planning and execution of foreign news, analysis and features coverage. This involves commissioning Irish Times correspondents and contributors around the world as well as sourcing news, features and images from agencies and elsewhere. Key responsibilities include ensuring breaking foreign news is published quickly and promoted well on our digital platforms; planning news schedules, ensuring there is strong mix of foreign coverage available throughout the day; liaising with foreign correspondents, and ensuring our foreign pages are presented with clarity and imagination.
Applicants will be expected to demonstrate an ability to maintain the well-established tradition of authoritative and comprehensive coverage of world events, directing The Irish Times network of foreign correspondents, stringers and contributors to ensure that they are deployed for maximum impact.
The successful applicant will be an experienced journalist with a deep knowledge of international affairs. They must be able to demonstrate the ability to take on a managerial role that demands leadership, considerable collaboration, organisational and planning skills as well as an exceptionally high degree of commitment and flexibility. Effective time management and the ability to set, manage and maintain deadlines are essential requirements for the role.
