White to referee final Gaelic Games News

GAELIC GAMES/News: Brian White has been named as referee for the All-Ireland senior football final between Armagh and Tyrone on September 28th.

It will be White's third final as he was also the man in the middle for the 1997 final between Kerry and Mayo and the 2000 replay between Galway and Kerry.

His performance will be heavily scrutinised because of the increased spotlight on referees in this year's championship, especially since Tyrone's foul-infested semi-final against Kerry.

In the aftermath GAA president Seán Kelly said the introduction of a second referee wasn't out of the question, because of the modern demands of the role.

However, Wexford-born White has a reputation for allowing the game to flow and is no stranger to the Armagh and Tyrone rivalry as he refereed the Ulster quarter-final replay between the sides in 2002.

He has plenty of experience, including the International Rules series, and was named referee of the year in 1994, 1997 and 2000. In 1991, his first year as an intercounty referee, he took charge of the Leinster final between Dublin and Kildare at Croke Park.

Meanwhile, Limerick PRO Denis Carroll has denied that they have anybody in line for the hurling post after the dismissal of Dave Keane on Monday evening.

"No name has been sent in for consideration," said Carroll. "Nobody has even been interviewed or considered for interview. Sure it will be a couple of weeks before that process begins."

Despite a successful spell as under-21 manager, when he led the county to three All-Ireland titles, Keane was removed after a no confidence motion was passed by 61 votes to 18.
